Answer: Salaams to you dear brother To find the views of Imam Ali (AS) on any of the issues that you have mentioned there is need for extensive researches, which is beyond the scope of this brief response. We are sending only a few hadiths quoted from Imam ‘Ali (p.b.u.h.) on each of the topics as follows: Self Confidence: 1. If the heavens and the earth close the doors on a person and that person fears from [disobeying] Allah[‘s commands], God will make a way for him to get out of the hard situation. Seek out your tranquility in truth; nothing but falsehood should frighten you.”Nahj al-Balaqa, sermon 130 (وَلَوْ أَنَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرَضِينَ كَانَتَا عَلَى عَبْدٍ رَتْقاً ، ثُمَّ اتَّقَى اللّه َ لَجَعَلَ اللّه ُ لَهُ مِنْهُمَا مَخْرَجاً . لاَ يُؤنِسَنَّكَ إِلاَّ الْحَقُّ ، وَلاَ يُوحِشَنَّكَ إِلاَّ الْبَاطِلُ: نهج البلاغه، الخطبه ۱۳۰.) 2. "Wise is he who understands his value. Ignorant are those who do not recognize their dignity and worth." Nahj al-Balaqa, sermon 103 (العالمُ مَن عرفَ قدرَه و كفى بالمرءِ جهلا أن لا يعرفَ قدرَه: نهج البلاغه، خطبه ۱۰۳.) 3. “Whoever does not [make an effort] to raise his dignity, no one else will do it for him.” Source: Qurar al-Hikam Wa Durar al-Hikam (the book of memorable words of Imam ‘Ali ( p.b.u.h.) translated into Persian by Mohammad ‘Ali Ansari, published by Muhammad ‘Ali Ansari, Tehran vol. 2, p. 642) (من لم ينجد لم ينجد: غررالحکم و دررالحکم، ترجمه محمد علي انصاري قمي، ناشر محمد علي انصاري قمي؛ تهران 1337.ج2؛ ص 642.) 4. The Commander of the faithful, Imam ‘Ali (p.b.u.h.), considers as blameworthy one’s urging whims of the soul, that is, subordinating one’s life to [unruling] passions and personal inclinations. This sort of confidence in one’s sensual desires destroys the life. There is a tradition to this effect, “When one trusts his sensual soul, it will act treacherously.” Hedayat al-‘ilm fi tanzim Qurar al-hikmah, volume 1, page 609, written by Husayn Shaykh al-Islam, ( مَنْ وَثَقَ بِنَفْسِهِ خانَتْهُ؛ هداية العلم في تنظيم غرر الحكم نويسنده : السيد حسين شيخ الإسلامي جلد : 1 صفحه : 609.) 5. Poverty sets off negative reactions, an example of which is social rejection. This may in turn prepare the ground for lack of self-confidence. Imam ‘Ali (p.b.u.h.) says, “Poverty entails lowering of a person’s [degree], astounding of his reasoning, and bringing about of his worries.” Source: Mawsu’a al-Imam ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (p.b.u.h.) fil Kitabl wa Saunna wa al-Tarikh, vol. 6, p. 200, written by Muhammd al-Rayshahri Imam ‘Ali (p.b.u.h.) has said, “When hardships frighten you, you [need to] become impenetrable to them. Experiencing hardships will make problems easier for you [to overcome].” Source: Uyun al-Hikam wa al-Mawa’iz, vol. 1, p. 136 author: ‘Ali bin Muhammad al-Laythi al-Wasity.
