There is no discrepancy between the two; therefore, neither the hadith nor the interpretation are wrong. In the above-mentioned hadith we learn that Almighty God has commanded His prophet not to proclaim Imam Ali's official authority (Wilayat) publicly and explicitly until He would give him the permission to do so (the day of Ghadeer Khum). On the other hand, Almighty God ordered the Holy Prophet (s.a.) as not to hide this matter from Imam Ali (a.s.) and to tell him that God had honored him. Thus, the Holy Prophet (s.a.) was authorized to announce the Wilayat of Imam Ali -implicitly and under special conditions - to Imam Ali himself and a number of intimate and prominent companions. There is ample historical evidence that Prophet Mohammad (s.a.) - from the very beginning of his prophetic mission - was trying to show the superiority of Imam Ali for attaining the status of being the 'immediate successor' (Wasi) of the Holy Prophet; examples as follows: • The Hadith titled as Yawm al-Daar (Admonition to Kinsmen): According to this hadith, the Holy Prophet (s.a.) asked his kinsmen (in the 4th year of his prophetic mission) to accept his call to Islam, and he declared Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s.) as his immediate successor. This admonition was done according to verse 214 of Surah al-Shu'ara: "… and warn the nearest of your kinsfolk…" • The story of Mubahila (Surah Aal Imran: Verse 61): "Should anyone argue with you concerning him, after the knowledge that has come to you, say, ‘Come! Let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, our souls and your souls, then let us pray earnestly, and call down Allah’s curse upon the liars." 'Our Souls' in this verse is actually a reference to Imam Ali (a.s.). • Virtues of Imam Ali as highlighted in Surah Hal Ataa (Surah al-Insan). • … and many other verses which indicate the Wilayat of Imam Ali directly or indirectly. ****** Hadith Kisa, too, is to be considered among such particular cases. There are very many narratives concerning the Hadith of Kisa which indicate that the Holy Prophet (s.a.) summoned Imam Ali, Holy Fatima, Imam Hasan and Imam Hussein (peace be upon them); then he placed them under his cloak and prayed: "O God! These are the members of my household, so remove any uncleanness and impurity from them". Soon afterwards, this verse was sent down unto the Holy Prophet: "Indeed Allah desires to repel all impurity from you, O People of the Household, and purify you with a thorough purification." (Surah al-Ahzab: Verse33) The famous scholar, Hakem Haskani Neishaburi, has narrated this hadith from many sources by different narrators in his book Shawahid al-Tanzil. ****** Now, the question arises, what was the purpose of gathering them together under the cloak? It seems that the Holy Prophet (s.a.) wanted to attest that only Ali, Fatima, Hasan and Hussein are the addressees of this verse (and no one else), lest anyone should doubt later and think that the verse may refer to wives or other members of the Holy Prophet's family! It has even been mentioned in some of the narratives that the Holy Prophet (s.a.) repeated this sentence three times: "O God! These are the members of my household, so remove any uncleanness and impurity from them". (اللهم هؤلاء أهل بيتي و خاصتى فاذهب عنهم الرجس و طهرهم تطهيرا)
