Question:
What is the correct definition of Kuffar and which people belong to the Kuffar? Do the Ahl-ul Kitab, especially the Christians, Jews and Sabeans count as Kuffar?

Answer:
Kuffar are those who do not believe in Allah (swt) and in the messages of his prophets. The Christians and the Jews are Monotheists. At the time of Prophet Mohammad (s.) they were called "Ahl Althimma" (the free non-Muslims who enjoyed protection and security in Muslim states, upon payment of the poll tax). They’ve been in the protection of the Muslims, and for that reason they differ from the Kuffar; they are pure for us in contrast to others.
