Answer:
Friendship in its commonly used meaning is not allowed between man and woman who are non Mahram to each other, because friendship creates mutual feelings and emotions between the friends, and this is not allowed between man and woman who are non Mahrams. Knowing someone does not mean having friendship with him or her. You may know your teacher and talk to him or her in necessary matters, but that does not mean friendship. Same with your doctor etc. Man and woman who are non Mahram to each other are not allowed to have any talk which can affect their hearts or sentiments. This is a precaution to avoid man and more importantly, the woman, being carried away by false sentiments which may lead to unhealthy thoughts or acts. Wassalam. Mohammad al-Musawi
