Is it true that the Islamic punishment for one who leaves the fold of Islam [i.e. an apostate (murtad)] is death sentence?

It is wrong to allege that Islam sentences to death every person who just did not keep to it. Allah (s.w.t.) says in Holy Qur’an: “There is no compulsion in religion, truth is distinct from falsehood”. The rules of Murtad have many detailed conditions which are either misunderstood by or even unknown to many Muslims as well as non-Muslims. Not every person who leaves the fold of Islam is sentenced to death. There are many difficult conditions which need to be established before such a punishment can be meted out. Usually he should have indulged in causing damage on the earth (Fasaad Fil Arz) which requires that many conditions be proved. Sayyed Mohammed Musawi
